April 3, 2009

Box Score

Playing in wind conditions that reached nearly 20-miles per hour, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team defeated Maryland, 5-2, Friday afternoon in College Park, Md.

“We competed well in some rough conditions with the wind over 20 miles per hour,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “I was proud of the guys for coming back strong in singles after losing the doubles point. We must now focus on Boston College in order to finish the road trip strong.”

The Jackets (8-9, 3-5 ACC) fell down 1-0 early, as the Terrapins picked up the doubles point with close wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Doug Kenny and Kevin King won first with an 8-6 decision over Kwon and Potarazu, but Maryland’s Orban and Fetbroyt took down Guillermo Gomez and Ryan Smith in a tough 9-8 win, before Nielsen and Sarrazin defeated Austin Roebuck and Eliot Potvin in an identical 9-8 score.

Tech came out strong in singles however, getting four straight wins for the clinch on tremendous play from Gomez, King, Smith and Muguruza. Gomez snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Andrew Orban, as King downed Mathias Sarrazin 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 and Smith triumphed over Boris Fetbroyt 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.

Muguruza got the clinching win at No. 2 for the second-straight match, with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 victory over UM’s David Kwon.

Rounding out the winning ways for Tech was Roebuck with a 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 surge past Alex Aksanov at No. 6. Roebuck has won three-consecutive matches, and has a 5-1 record in singles play. Tech won five singles matches against its second-straight opponent.

The Jackets return to action Sunday, with an 11 a.m. match at Boston College.
