Jackets Sweep Wisconsin in National Indoor Championship Consolations

Madison, Wisc. – Seventh-ranked Kristi Miller battled back after dropping her first set at No. 1 singles to clinch the match victory for Georgia Tech (1-1), as the third-ranked Yellow Jackets swept the host school Wisconsin (1-3), 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.

The Yellow Jackets faced the Badgers in the first of two first-round consolation matches, with the other coming against the 12th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats Saturday at 9 a.m. local time.

Tech earned the first point of the match after winning all three doubles matches. The Yellow Jacket duo of Tarryn Rudman and Lyndsay Shosho defeated Nicole Beck and Chelsea Nusslock by an 8-4 score at No. 3 doubles, and 42nd-ranked Kelly Anderson and Whitney McCray stopped the Badger duo of Morgan Tuttle and Kaylan Caiati in the No. 2 position, 8-5, to clinch the point.

No. 26 Kristi Miller and Lyndsay Shosho helped Tech complete the doubles sweep when they defeated Wisconsin’s Elizabeth Carpenter and Caitlin Burke, 8-7 (5) at the No. 1 position.

McCray put the Jackets up 2-0 in the match by blanking Tuttle, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, and No. 71 Shosho gave Tech a 3-0 edge when she easily defeated Caiati, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 slot. Miller came back after dropping her first set to 55th-ranked Caitlin Burke, 4-6, to win the next two, 6-4, 6-1, capturing the clinching point for the Jackets.

No. 25 Rudman helped Tech to a 5-0 lead by stopping Beck, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, and Silverio gave the Jackets a 6-0 edge when she defeated Nusslock, 6-3, 6-4.

Rookie Christy Striplin completed the sweep for the Yellow Jackets when she came back after dropping the first set, 2-6, to Carpenter to win the second set, 6-3, which set up a super-tiebreaker third set, in which the Birmingham, Ala. native won, 10-4.

Tech continues play in the consolation round of the National Indoor Team Championships against Kentucky at 9 a.m. CT The Wildcats are 0-2 in this weekend’s event after falling to top-ranked Stanford and No. 5 Northwestern.
