BLACKSBURG, Va. – Georgia Tech volleyball (12-12, 7-6 ACC) took care of business on Friday night, sweeping Virginia Tech (8-15, 2-11 ACC), 3-0, on the road.
Head coach Michelle Collier says:
“It was great to get a conference win on the road. There are still aspects of our game that we need to clean up and we’ve got to get refocused as we are right back at it tomorrow night at Virginia. Overall, I’m glad we were able to get the job done and come out with the win.”
How it happened:
The Jackets came out slow, allowing the Hokies to take the first three points unanswered. Sophomore Kodie Comby got things going for the Jackets and a 5-0 run off the serve of sophomore Emily Becker allowed the Jackets to take over the lead at 8-5. The Hokies brought it back within one at 15-14 and the teams stayed close. The Yellow Jackets maintained their lead and freshman Cori Clifton sealed the set at 25-22 for the 1-0 advantage.
The two teams started out the set trading points but a 6-0 run by the Jackets fueled Georgia Tech to a 9-4 lead. The Hokies came back in a big way, using a 6-0 run of their own to overtake the Jackets and snag the lead at 16-13. The Jackets bounced back, taking four in a row to regain the lead at 17-16, this time for good, and the Jackets took the set at 25-22.
Georgia Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third. The Hokies tied it up at 8-8 before taking the lead. The Jackets called timeout as Virginia Tech took the edge at 10-8 and the Jackets managed to tie the set back up at 11-11. Georgia Tech regained the lead off a kill from Clifton and held onto it this time. Clifton finished off the Hokies with a kill at 25-19 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
