Jackets Sweep Big Green in Doubleheader

THE FLATS โ€“ย Georgia Tech softball (20-9, 2-7 ACC) downed Dartmouth (3-16, 0-0 IVY) twice in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Mewborn Field, silencing the Big Green bats on the way to a 1-0 victory in game one and a 9-1, five-inning mercy rule victory in game two.

The Yellow Jacket dominance in the circle was led by junior hurler Chandler Dennis in game one and freshman slinger Sophia Voyles in game two. Both pitchers tossed complete games as Dennis started off the day heaving seven innings while picking up nine strikeouts and allowing just two hits for a shutout. Voyles followed with five strong innings in game two, surrendering just one run on two hits while adding four punchouts of her own.

Sophomore catcher Sara Beth Allen had the biggest swing of the day, knocking a walk-off single against the wall in game one as she finished the day 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored and a pair of walks. Graduate first baseman Tricia Awald picked up a pair of hits and RBI on the day as she knocked her fifth home run of the season.

Game One: Both starting pitchers reigned supreme in game one as neither side managed a hit until the sixth inning. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh as Tech used a two-out rally to walk it off. Sophomore catcher Sandra Beth Pritchett started the rally with a double, allowing Allen to step in and knock a walk-off single, driving in senior pinch runner Kennedy Cowden to secure the 1-0 Yellow Jacket victory.

Game Two: Awald got the Jackets going early in game two, blasting a solo shot well over right field. As Voyles kept the Big Green bats in check, Tech added two more scores in the second as freshman left fielder Auburn Dupree and senior second baseman Bailee Zeitler both scampered home on a sequence of Dartmouth miscues. Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fourth, Dartmouth took back a run of its own by way of an RBI groundout. The Jacket bats then erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth, abruptly clinching a mercy rule triumph. Tech led off the bottom half with three straight singles as Awald sent in the first score for a 4-1 lead. Shortly after, back-to-back walks forced home another Jacket score, setting up an RBI single off the bat of senior pinch hitter Ariella Jackson to extend Techโ€™s lead to 6-1. The Big Green would fail to get out of the jam from there, allowing another single by sophomore pinch hitter Abby Hughes and two more RBI walks, resulting in a 9-1 win in five innings for the Yellow Jackets.
