Jackets Swarm Panthers, 9-1

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (10-2) coasted past Georgia State for a 9-1 mercy-rule victory through five innings on Wednesday afternoon at Mewborn Field.

Junior hurler Blake Neleman turned in another solid performance for her sixth complete game win, allowing just one run on two hits while tallying eight strikeouts. Offensively, the Jackets used strong plate discipline to take advantage of Panther miscues, only needing four hits to score nine runs.

The White and Gold blitzed Georgia State (2-6) early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. After a pair of walks and an error by the Panthers loaded the base path, a catcher’s interference call followed by a two-RBI single off the bat of freshman second baseman Grace Connelly put the Jackets up, 3-0. Two walks to follow then plated one more run for the home team.

In the bottom of the third, Tech added another score as sophomore shortstop Jin Sileo doubled to left and was driven in by freshman left fielder Auburn Dupree for a 5-0 advantage.

Georgia State got a run back in the top of the fourth with an RBI single, but Georgia Tech responded with two more scores in the bottom half. The Jackets loaded the bases once more, allowing another catcher’s interference and an RBI groundout to push the White and Gold out to a 7-1 lead.

Tech closed out the mercy rule victory in the bottom of the fifth as freshman center fielder Ella Edgmon walked and later scored on a wild pitch, allowing an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Mallorie Black to wrap up a 9-1 triumph for the Yellow Jackets in five innings.
