Jackets Suffer First Conference Loss at Miami Tuesday

March 20, 2007

Coral Gables, Fla. – The Yellow Jackets suffered their first Atlantic Coast Conference loss Tuesday when they were swept by the Hurricanes at Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Miami.

The Canes swept all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the afternoon and, they never looked back.

Miami’s Daniel Vallverdu downed Jordan DeLass in straight sets in the No. 2 singles spot. Luke Rassow-Kantor then fell to Vivek Subramanian 6-2, 7-5. Jose Muguruza, playing No. 1 singles, dropped his first set to 26th-ranked Luigi D’Agord, 6-0, but claimed the second set 6-3. Muguruza’s comeback wasn’t enough to get Tech on the board though as he dropped the third set, 6-4.

Eric Molnar, playing in the third singles spot, fell to Josh Cohen, 6-7, 6-2, 10-6, followed by fellow senior Zach Rath who lost to J.C. Whitner in straight sets.

Scott Blackmon closed out the match losing a three-set battle with Hector Nieto. Nieto won the first set but the Tech’s Blackmon took the second, 6-3. The match ended with a 10-8 third-set win by Nieto to complete the 7-0 sweep.

Tech slips to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The Jackets look to bounce back Friday, March 23 when they host the North Carolina at 2:00 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
