Jackets Start Strong at Wilson/ITA South Regional

Oct. 20, 2006

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team won seven of eight singles matches on the first day of the 2006 Wilson/ITA South Regional to advance to the second round of competition, which begins Friday morning at the Alabama Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Alabama.

Due to rain in the area, the Yellow Jackets were able to play just one round of singles matches on the day, but are scheduled to play two doubles and one singles match Friday.

Junior All-American Kristi Miller, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, advanced to a second-round match against Florida State’s Lauren MacFarlane with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over UCF’s Anna Yakimchenkova Thursday morning, while eighth-seeded Alison Silverio also posted a straight-set victory, defeating Miami’s Romy Farah, 6-3, 6-1, to set up a second-round meeting with Florida State’s Jessica Wente.

The Jackets’ final seeded player in the tournament, No. 16 Tarryn Rudman, battled through a three-set match against Florida’s Csilla Borsanyi to win, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, and will play Georgia’s Lara Fakhoury at 12 noon Friday.

Sophomore Christy Striplin faced Valeriya Makarycheva in her first round match and defeated the Mississippi State player, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to a second round match against ninth-seeded Monica Dancevic of Miami, while rookie Amanda Craddock made quick work of Georgia’s Adrienne Elsberry, 6-1, 6-1, and will face South Florida’s seventh-seeded Courtney Vernon Friday morning.

Joining Silverio and Rudman in the bottom half of the singles bracket was rookie Kirsten Miller, who stopped UAB’s Nischa Maier-Knapp, 6-2, 6-2, to set up a meeting with Georgia’s 16th-seeded Yvette Hyndman in Friday’s second round, and sophomore Whitney McCray, who downed South Florida’s Jessica Sweeting, 6-3, 7-6 (6), just before midnight. She will meet second-seeded Diana Srebrovic of Florida in the second round Friday afternoon.

Rounding out the Yellow Jackets’ play on Thursday was freshmen Amanda McDowell, who lost to fourth-seeded Natalie Frazier of Georgia in the first round, 6-7 (3), 0-6.
