Jackets Squeeze Past Orange, 4-2

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (21-9, 3-7 ACC) sped past Syracuse (17-10, 1-6 ACC) late, 4-2, on Friday night at Mewborn Field, rallying with back-to-back two-run innings in its final pair of at bats to seal the victory.

Sophomore third baseman Mallorie Black led the Jackets at the dish from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-3 and driving in three of the Jackets’ four runs on the day. Freshman center fielder Ella Edgmon had a strong day at the plate from the nine hole as well, also going 2-for-3 as she scored two of Tech’s runs and picked up an RBI of her own.

Junior hurler Blake Neleman did the lion’s share of the work in the circle for the White and Gold, nearly tossing five innings while surrendering a pair of runs on five hits and picking up six strikeouts. Senior slinger Palmer Pinholster picked up an out in relief before junior pitcher Chandler Dennis closed out the final two innings, collecting three punchouts and the win.

Georgia Tech answered with a pair of runs of its own in the bottom half as freshman left fielder Auburn Dupree reached to lead off and was followed by a single from Edgmon, allowing a Black double to knot the game at two apiece. The Yellow Jackets kept the Orange bats at bay in the top of the sixth, but added two more scores in the bottom of the frame by way of two RBI singles. Senior second baseman Bailee Zeitler led things off with a single and moved to second, setting up an RBI single from Edgmon followed by yet another RBI single off the bat of Black. Syracuse went down in order in the top of the seventh, securing Tech’s series-opening, 4-2 win.
