Jackets Record 99-58 Victory Against Alabama State

THE FLATS –The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (9-3) stayed undefeated at home, recording a 99-58 victory against Alabama State during the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament at McCamish Pavilion.

Freshman Kaela Davis and senior Dawnn Maye scored 18 points each on the way to leading Tech to its sixth victory at McCamish Pavilion this season. Davis had a season-high five steals against the Hornets and grabbed eight rebounds. Maye dished out a team-high three assists while also recording eight rebounds.

“I thought we got some great play off of our bench with Dawnn Maye,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “Eighteen points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes were very valuable. Just the way she led on the floor was great.”

After some time off for the holidays, the Jackets came out ready to play, outscoring the Hornets 33-4 in the first 10:28 of the game. Senior Tyaunna Marshall led the team in rebounding with nine boards and scored 16 points in Tech’s first game back.

“I was really impressed by the way we came out, especially in the first five minutes of the game,” Joseph said. “Coming off of a break, you just never know how your team is going to respond. We came out aggressive on both the offensive end and the defensive end. I was just really impressed with Tyaunna Marshall’s leadership and the way we made shots and made plays.”

Freshman Katarina Vuckovic had an impressive game, notching season-highs in both points, 11, and rebounds, eight. The freshman also recorded a block against Alabama State.

“I thought Katarina Vuckovic had some really quality minutes inside,” Joseph said. “She was really able to step up for us.”

Marshall’s 16 points against the Hornets pushed her over 1,700 career points. The senior has 1,704 career points and is 251 points behind breaking Kisha Ford’s all-time record of 1,955. Marshall is currently in fourth on the Yellow Jackets’ career scoring list and only 20 points away from tying Dolores Bootz (1985-88) for third.

The Yellow Jackets dominated on offense in the first half, scoring 58 points – its highest offense output in a half this season. Prior to today’s game, the most points the Jackets scored have scored in a half was 54 against UTEP on 12/20/13 during the Puerto Rico Classic. Georgia Tech is currently averaging 92.5 points per game at home.

The Jackets were hot out of the gates, opening up the game with a 13-0 run. Tech held the Hornets scoreless for the first 4:54 minutes of the game.

The Jackets would then keep up their high-momentum offense, scoring 18 straight points, running to a 33-2 lead at 9:41. During the run, seven different Jackets scored.

During the first half, Tech’s defense held the Hornets to just a 27.3 percent shooting clip. The Jackets only allowed the Hornets to score four points in the first 11:22 minutes of the game in the first half.

Four Jackets scored in double-figures in the first half – Davis had 14, Marshall had 11, Sydney Wallace scored 10 and Maye added 10 – to help the Jackets to a 58-23 lead heading into halftime.

Five-straight points from Vuckovic at the 14:02 mark in the second half put the Jackets ahead, 70-31.

Georgia Tech utilized a 9-1 run that began with 7:20 remaining to reach the 90-point mark. During the run, freshman Donnaizha Fountain scored four of her eight total points. The Jackets have scored 90 or more points in five of their 12 games this season.

The Yellow Jackets face Hampton tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the championship game of the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament. Alabama State and Brown will play in the consolation game at 12 p.m.
