Jackets Pull Two Bronze Medals on Final Day of ACC Championships

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech swimming and diving wrapped up the ACC Championships hosted at McAuley Aquatic Center on Saturday. The men’s team finished fifth (742.5 points) while the women finished 10th (407 points).

The men’s teams finish is the highest they have finished since 2016 and only the second time in the past 12 conference tournaments that the team has finished fifth or better.

Saturday’s action started with the 1650 free with Mert Kilavuz swimming in the final 1650 heat of night and taking the bronze medal. Kilavuz beat his own program record in the 1000 free with a split of 8:49.76.

Tech earned one more medal on the day from Caio Pumputis in the 200 breast. Pumputis was leading after the first 50 yards by 0.03 seconds before his competition slowly began to overtake him before ultimately finishing in third, his time (1:52.19) was good for an ‘A’ cut.

The last A – Finalist on the night came from Berke Saka who qualified in the 200 back. Saka turned in a time of 1:40.49 which beat his previous personal best which was the program record.

On the women’s platform, Carmen Woodruff and Camryn Hidalgo made it to the finals placing seventh and eighth, respectively.

More notable results pertaining to the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships were achieved on the day. Morgan Johnson swam a ‘B’ cut in the 1650 free (16:29.88) during her heat while Clarissa Sabin earned her second ‘B’ cut of the championships during the 200 breast clocking in at 2:13.25. Sabin had previously swam a ‘B’ cut time during the 100 breast.

In addition to these new NCAA cuts, Kilavuz (1650 free, 14:43.26) and Berke Saka (200 back, 1:40.49) posted times that would have been invited to the 2021 NCAA Championships.

In total, over the course of the ACC Championships, Georgia Tech put up three new NCAA ‘A’ cuts, five new NCAA ‘B’ cuts, six new program records and 11 times that would have been invited to the 2021 NCAA Championships.
