ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s track and field team finished fifth at the Indoor Atlantic Coast Conference Championships with 72 points, finishing in the top five for the third consecutive year. Six Yellow Jackets earned All-ACC honors and two won ACC championships.
Senior All-American Brendon Mahoney returned to the top of the podium at the 2004 meet, with first-place finishes in the 800 meters and mile. Mahoney posted a time of 1:53.77 in the 800, claiming his second ACC title of his career in the event (2001). The Cumming, Ga., native then posted a time of 4:12.31 in the mile to win his second ACC crown of the meet. Mahoney has earned a total of 11 All-ACC honors throughout his illustrious career.
After missing the last two seasons, junior Montrell Person became the first men’s Tech competitor to claim an ACC title in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.88.
Senior Michael Massey tallied a runner-up finish for the Yellow Jackets with a mark of 7’0.50″ in the high jump to earn his first all-conference honor during the indoor season.
Senior Kyle Rabbitt and juniors Holt McPherson and Zeb Sion all garnered All-ACC honors for the Rambling Wreck. Rabbitt finished the 5000 meters in third place with a season-best time of 14:38.10.
McPherson, a transfer from Appalachian State in January, finished third in the long jump with a mark of 23’10.25″.
Sion, who tallied all-conference honors for the second straight season, tossed the shot put 58’0.25″ to finish in third place for the Yellow Jackets.
Massey (HJ), McPherson (LJ) and Person (60mH) will all travel to Boston, Mass., for the U.S.A Track and Field Indoor Championships, Feb. 27-29. The top two finishers in each event will compete for Team USA at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics March 5-7 in Budapest, Hungary.
