ATLANTA (Sept. 25) – Georgia Tech freshman Jaime Wong advanced to the final of the flight “A” singles draw to lead four Yellow Jacket singles players and four Tech doubles play into the finals of their respective flights at the 1999 Georgia Tech/Holiday Inn Midtown North Women’s Tennis Invitational Saturday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
Sophomore Laura Ozolins and freshman Charlotte Pernet will meet Sunday in an all Tech final in the flight “B” singles championship, while senior Tamarra Jenkin will play for the flight “C” singles title.
The Jackets also claimed all four finals spots in the “A” and “B” doubles draws. Sophomore Mason Miller and senior Sabrina Pardo advanced to face junior Bobbi Guthrie and Jenkin in the flight “A” doubles final, while Ozolins and Pernet will team up after their singles tilt to meet Wong and fellow freshman Mysti Morris in the flight “B” doubles final.
“Overall, this was a good day for us,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “I was pleased with how all the girls played. Nothing should be different for us tomorrow. We want to come out hungry and finish the weekend right.”
Wong, Ozolins, Pernet and Jenkin all won two singles matches Saturday to advance to Sunday’s finals. Wong rallied from a set down in the flight “A” semifinals to defeat Stetson’s Taryn Lynn, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, to earn a berth in the final. Pernet also had to rally from a set down in her semifinal match with Georgia State’s Ana Kolar in the singles “B” flight before winning, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Ozolins and Jenkin won both their singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles, Miller and Pardo blanked UNC Greensboro’s Jenny Gonzalez and Audrey LeGay, 8-0, to reach the “A” final.
Ozolins and Pernet reached the “B” flight doubles final with an 8-3 win over Nina Jansen and Jovana Kriskapa of Georgia State, while Morris and Wong advanced with an 8-0 win over Jacksonville’s Tamara Kaftalovich and Tiffany Pinciotti.
Sunday’s singles finals will begin at 9 a.m. with doubles to follow.
