Jackets Place 14 on Scholar All-America Teams

THE FLATS — The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs featured 14 student-athletes on the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) scholar all-America team, as announced by the organization this week.

Both the men’s and women’s teams also received Scholar All-America recognition from the CSCAA for achieving a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the 2017 spring semester. The men’s team earned the honor with a combined grade point average of 3.05 for the semester, while the women’s squad recorded a 3.11 team grade point average over the spring term.

Earning CSCAA scholar all-America honorable mentions accolades on the women’s team were recent graduates Andrea Demick, Chiara Ruiu and Maddie Paschal, as well as Kaitlin Kitchens and Kira de Bruyn. The academic honor is the fourth for Demick having received honorable mention recognition in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 as well. For both Paschal and de Bruyn this is the second time that they have been recognized by the CSCAA, while it is the first CSCAA academic honor for both Ruiu and Kitchens.

On the men’s side, Robert BorowiczOmar Eteiba, Noah HaraszNolan Mallet, Joseph PortilloAlex Kimpel, Joonas Koski, Brian Woodbury and Matt Casillas all received honorable mention recognition. This is the second straight year in which Borowicz, who was also named to both the 2016-17 CoSIDA academic all-America men’s at large team and the 2016-17 all-ACC academic team, has received CSCAA scholar all-America honorable mention honors, while it’s the fourth time for Eteiba who was also named to the 2016-17 all-ACC academic team.

Harasz, who was a CSCAA scholar all-America first team member in 2014-15, was also named a scholar all-America honorable mention last year, as was Portillo, Woodbury and Mallet. It is the first CSCAA academic honor for both Casillas and Kimpel.

To be selected to the CSCAA scholar all-America team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a “B” time standard or competed at their respective diving qualifying meets.
