Jackets Pick Up Four Wins on Day Two of Southern Intercollegiates

Sept. 20, 2009

ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Miguel Muguruza picked up a win in both singles and doubles play to lead the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team Saturday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

Similar to the first day of competition, heavy rain forced matches to be pushed back hours, and even a day in some flights.

Played did resume, however, in the second flight of singles where Muguruza dispatched College of Charleston’s Bill Kenny 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16. He will face USC-Upstate’s Reno Airaldi at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Also moving through the round in the second flight was sophomore Dusan Miljevic, as he defeated USC-Upstate’s Jack Roux in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. This was the second all-time meeting between the two as Miljevic defeated Roux 7-5, 6-3 back in January.

In the second flight of doubles, Muguruza teamed up with junior Doug Kenny to down College of Charleston’s John Harden and Kyle Parker 8-7 (3) in the tiebreaker.

The duo of Eliot Potvin and Austin Roebuck also picked up a win on the day, defeating Wofford’s Tom Wood and Drew Superstein by an 8-3 score.

Both teams will play in the round of 16 Sunday evening. Also returning to action tomorrow will be first flight singles contenders Guillermo Gomez, Eliot Potvin and Dean O’Brien. Their play in the round of 32 will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the morning.
