Jackets Open Strong at Roberta Alison Fall Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Georgia Tech women’s tennis opened the Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Friday notching six victories between doubles and singles play. Tech was represented by Luca Fabian, Nadia Gizdova, Kenya Jones and Nami Otsuka.

Seeing Double
One round of doubles action took place on Friday and the Yellow Jackets were victorious in both matches, advancing in play to Saturday’s two rounds.

Competing in the Shelley Godwin Draw, the Yellow Jacket duo of Jones/Fabian bypassed DePaul’s Yulia Shupenia and Ana Vladutu easily with an 8-3 decision. Tech was also victorious in the Nancy Harris Draw as Otsuka and Gizdova handed Memphis’ Gabrielle Paul/Josephine Cao an 8-4 loss.

Singles Action
On the day, Tech went 4-4 in singles play. Winning both her singles matches, Jones will battle for the title of the Selia Mathew Draw on Saturday. The Yellow Jacket opened singles play on Friday taking a straight set decision over Danielle Spielmann of Alabama, 6-3, 6-1, before cruising past Memphis’ Anki Wind, 6-1, 6-1. Jones will compete for the title in the Selia Mathew Draw on Saturday against DePaul’s Yulia Shupenia.

Otsuka split her singles matches on Friday, notching a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory in the first round over Pardis Kianoush from UAB. In her second match, Otsuka faced Maria Toran Ribes of Kansas, taking Ribes into a third set, but falling 1-6, 6-0, 4-6. Gizdova also split her matches, posting a 1-1 singles mark on Friday. The freshman opened with a battle in the first match, taking down Tea Jandric of Ole Miss 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) before falling to Georgina Axon of Alabama, 6-2, 6-2 in the Myke Loomis Draw.

Fabian had a difficult day in singles play, dropping both her matches. Fabian opened singles action falling to Joanna Savva of host Alabama, 6-0, 6-2, before dropping a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision to Clemson’s Jennifer Moinard in the second round in the Patti Farmer Draw.

Up Next
Tech will wrap up the fall tournament on Saturday with the final round of singles play and two rounds of doubles play. Action begins at 9 a.m. with the first round of doubles. In singles play, Jones will face Shupenia (DePaul), Gizdova will take on Patricia Lancranjan (DePaul) and Otsuka will challenge Alannah Griffin (Auburn). In doubles, Jones/Fabian will open the day facing Suk/Jandric (Ole Miss) and Otsuka/Gizdova will challenge Edwards/Patton (UTC).
