Jackets Improve to 9-1 With 69-43 Win over Troy

ATLANTA – Junior guard Stephanie Higgs scored 16 points to lead Georgia Tech (9-1) to its fourth-straight victory, a 69-42 win over Troy (5-4) Thursday afternoon at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

After leading 35-22 at halftime, Georgia Tech went on a 16-7 run to begin the second half, extending the lead to 51-29 on a layup by rookie April Phillips with 8:38 remaining.

Tech finished the contest shooting over 44 percent from the floor for the second-straight game, while holding the Trojans to 32.7 percent. The Jackets also forced 25 Troy turnovers, leading to 13 Georgia Tech steals, while committing just 19 turnovers of their own.

Rookie backup point guard Jacqua Williams led the team in rebounding with seven in the game, while also recording three assists and two steals in 22 minutes of play. Tech outrebounded the Trojans, 42-31. The Jackets outscored the Trojans 42-8 in the paint, with 33 of their 69 points coming off turnovers.

The Jackets went on a 26-8 run to begin the game and carried a 13-point lead into the locker room at halftime behind an 11-point first half by Higgs. The junior converted on 5-of-8 from the field, including one from beyond the three-point arc, as Tech shot 50 percent from the floor in the frame while holding the Trojans to just 34.2 percent. Overall, the Jackets forced 16 Troy turnovers, which corresponded to 18 Georgia Tech points in the half.

Georgia Tech will take a week off for the Christmas holiday before returning to Atlanta to host the annual Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott NW Holiday Invitational Dec. 30th and 31st. The Jackets will begin the tournament by facing Alabama State on the 30th at 1 p.m., with Brown and UMass meeting each other immediately following at 3 p.m. The winners of the two games will meet on New Year’s Eve at 1:30 p.m., with the consolation game scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
