Blacksburg, Va. – Juan Spir won in both singles and doubles at the top of the lineup Friday, but those were the only matches Georgia Tech would win as 52nd-ranked Virginia Tech defeated the Yellow Jackets, 6-1, in Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets (8-13, 1-7 ACC) got the match off to a good start when Spir and Eduardo Segura captured an 8-4 victory over Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini at No. 1 doubles. But the Jackets could not sustain the momentum and lost the doubles point after Juan Melian and Nathan Rakitt dropped an 8-4 decision to Hunter Koontz and Lucas Oliveira at No. 2, and Colin Edward and Vikram Hundal lost 8-6 to Trpimir Kujundzic and Marko Lovrinovic at No. 3.

The No. 3 doubles contest marked the first competitive action for Hundal since Feb. 28, when the sophomore from Alpahretta, Ga., suffered a knee injury against Georgia State. He did not play singles.

Virginia Tech (12-7, 4-3 ACC) rolled in singles after seizing the doubles point, securing straight-set victories at the bottom of the lineup and clinching the match when Bjerrehus, ranked No. 94, defeated Melian, 6-4, 6-4, on court 2. Joao Monteiro had already knocked off Anish Sharma at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1, and Kujundzic took down Edwards, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6.

Meanwhile, Spir, Segura and Rakitt battled ahead as their matches extended to three sets. Spir, ranked 68th nationally, completed a 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 73 Contini for the Yellow Jackets’ only singles victory of the match. Rakitt won his middle set in a tiebreaker but couldn’t finish off his match at No. 3, losing to Koontz, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4. Segura suffered the same fate at No. 4 in a 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 loss to Oliveira.

Tech travels up to Charlottesville for a 12 noon match Saturday against top-ranked and undefeated Virginia.
