Jackets Get Back on Track With 6-1 win over NC State

March 29, 2009

The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team won two doubles and five singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over NC State Sunday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

“We have played a very tough schedule this season, and I think this match showed that we have not given up,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “If we can get Guillermo [Gomez] playing well again, I think we will be in great shape.”

The Jackets (7-9, 2-5 ACC) won the doubles point for the second straight match, with wins at No. 1 and No.3.

Down 5-3 with the serve, Tech’s No. 1 duo of Guillermo Gomez and Ryan Smith rattled off five straight game winners to clinch the point for the Jackets with an 8-5 win. After clinching the doubles point for Tech against Wake Forest on Friday, Eliot Potvin and Austin Roebuck gave the Jackets momentum early with an 8-1 victory over NC State’s Rob Lowe and Justin Jendruch at the No. 3 position. The Wolfpack’s Jay Weinacker and Jamie Pulgar defeated Doug Kenny and Kevin King at No. 2, the Tech had already taken doubles.

The Pack would tie the score at 1-1 to start singles play, as Jay Weinacker defeated Gomez at No. 1, 6-4, 6-1, before Tech capitalized on back-to-back wins from Smith and King at No. 5 and No. 4. Smith defeated State’s Akash Gujatati 6-2, 6-3 before King triumphed over Derek Stephens 6-3, 6-2 to extend the lead to 3-1.

Sophomore Miguel Muguruza clinched the match for Tech soon after with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Christian Welte at the No. 2 position. The victory for Muguruza was his 15th of the season, seventh in dual match play.

Potvin won his 19th match of the season with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Pulgar at No. 3 to extend Tech’s lead to 5-1. In just his fifth match of the dual season, Roebuck held strong at No. 6 with a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-7) win over David Chermak to close out the match. The two played the third set as a 10-point tiebreak due to Tech having already clinched the match. Roebuck is now 4-1 in dual match play.

The Jackets return to action against Maryland next Friday in College Park, Md. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
