Jackets Finish Up Time At Florida Relays, Tiger Track Classic

ATLANTA – Shawn Roberts brought home a first place finish in the 1,500m run at the Florida Relays as the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams finished up their time at the Relays as well as the Tiger Track Classic this weekend.

Roberts’ time of 3:46.85 was just shy of his top-time this season and was the fastest of 39 runners at the meet.

Also doing well at the Florida Relays was Betsy Kim who took home sixth place in the 5,000 meter run with a personal best time of 17:07.62. Katie Townsend took ninth in the race also with a personal best time of 17:18.42 and Mary Kate DuBard, in her first race of the season took home 15th in 17:50.06.

Melanie Akwule finished ninth of 63 in the 100m hurdles with a 13.77 second finish.

On the field side of things, Julienne McKee took home third place in the triple jump with a leap of 13.02m (42-8.75) while Jhanelle McLeod earned a ninth place finish in 12.19m (40-0). On the men’s side, Nikita Kirillov finished in third place in the pole vault with a leap of 5.20m (17-0.75), his fourth leap of over 17 feet this year. Aaron Unterberger took home sixth in the pole vault with a height of 5.10m (15-8.75). Mykhail Chambers also took home ninth in the high jump with a height of 2.10m (6-10.75).

Tech’s distance medley squads also saw success at the meet as the men finished third with a time of 9:52.06 while the women finished fifth in 12:05.67.

At the Tiger Track Classic, Jasmine Kent excelled in the long jump with a fourth place finish and a distance of 5.84m (19-2). Brandon Mbaba finished with a sixth place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.97m (6-5.5).

On the track, Doug Black earned a sixth place finish in the 3,000m run with a personal best time of 8:21.68. Niall Longobardi crossed the line just behind Black also with a person best finish of 8:23.97.

The Jackets will take a much needed week off this weekend before they regroup at the ACC Outdoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. from April 19-21.
