Jackets Fall to UNC in ACC Championship Match, 4-1

ROME, Ga. – Carol Lee captured a straight set win on court five, but it wasn’t enough as No. 16 Georgia Tech fell to top-seed and No. 1 North Carolina in the 2021 ACC Championship match on Sunday, 4-1. The Yellow Jackets moved to 18-10 overall with the loss.

DOUBLES – North Carolina came out strong in doubles, grabbing the early lead on all three courts. The Tar Heels took the edge in doubles, winning at the top spot as No. 3 Sara Daavettila and Cameron Morra defeated No. 2 Kenya Jones and Victoria Flores, 6-2. The point was clinched at the three spot as No. 32 Alle Sanford and Reilly Tran edged Monika Dedaj and Carol Lee, 6-3. UNC swept doubles action, taking a 6-4 win on court two.

SINGLES – No. 31 Fiona Crawley gave UNC a 2-0 match lead, winning in straight sets on court six, 6-0, 6-2, over Mahak Jain before Lee put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard. Lee cruised in the opening set against No. 23 Makenna Jones, grabbing a 4-0 lead over the Tar Heel and pocketed the first set, 6-1. The freshman Jacket carried momentum into the second set, leading 2-0, and never looked back, sealing the win with another 6-1 set to setup a 2-1 score.

North Carolina quickly sealed the match with wins on courts three and four. No. 34 Alexa Graham defeated Gia Cohen, 7-5, 6-1, on court three before Elizabeth Scotty clinched the match from court four, winning, 6-4, 6-2, over Ava Hrastar for the 4-1 victory.

UP NEXT – The NCAA Division I women’s tennis championship selections will be announced on Monday, May 3 at 6 p.m.
