Jackets Fall to San Diego, 4-1

BERKELEY, Calif. Carol Lee collected a singles victory, but it wasn’t enough as No. 25 Georgia Tech fell 4-1 to San Diego on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Hosted by Cal, the tournament is being played at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Georgia Tech dropped to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

Doubles
Georgia Tech’s doubles team of Kylie Bilchev and Alejandra Cruz dominated court two against San Diego’s Solymar Colling and Abigail Desiatnikov. On serve at 1-all in the early going, the Jackets rattled off the next three games to take a 4-1 lead. San Diego won the next game for a 4-2 tally, but Bilchev and Cruz would pocket the next two games to take the match, 6-2, and give Tech the early advantage in doubles.

The edge was short-lived, however, as San Diego took break leads at 4-3 on courts one and three. Both courts were on serve at 3-all before the Toreros took the advantage, holding for 6-4 victories to clinch the doubles point and early match lead.

Singles
San Diego took a 2-0 lead, capturing court five in straight-sets before Lee put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard from court one. Facing Colling, Lee stood knotted at 4-4 in the opening set but won the next two games for a 6-4 set victory. Lee gained momentum quickly in the second set, opening with a 4-1 lead before sealing the win over Colling with a 6-2 second set for a 2-1 match score.

Tech’s rally fell short, however, as San Diego clinched the match winning on courts three and six in straight-sets to account for the 4-1 score.

Georgia Tech returns to the courts in the consolation match on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST and will face Princeton.
