Jackets Fall to Hokies, 73-48, in Women's Hoops

Blacksburg, VA – Kerri Gardin led all scorers with 18 points as Virginia Tech (15-9, 4-7 ACC) defeated Georgia Tech (13-10, 4-7 ACC), 73-48, Wednesday evening at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.

Stephanie Higgs paced the Yellow Jackets with 17 points while Janie Mitchell added 10 points and seven rebounds. Rookie point guard Jill Ingram paced Tech on the boards, pulling down 10 rebounds while added seven points.

Gardin led three Hokies in double figures as Erin Gibson added 12, while Roshana Jackson came off the bench to score 11, and Virginia Tech shot 42.9 percent from the field on the evening. The Hokies had 21 points off Georgia Tech’s 16 turnovers while committing just seven miscues of their own.

After leading by just four points 10 minutes into the game, Virginia Tech went on a 18-8 run to close the first half and took a 32-18 lead into the locker room. Kerri Gardin led the Hokies with 10 points in the frame, connecting on 5-of-6 attempts from the field, while Virginia Tech converted on all seven free-throw attempts. Stephanie Higgs paced the Yellow Jackets with eight points in the first period as Tech struggled from the field, shooting just 31 percent, while turning the ball over nine times, which led to 11 Hokie points in the half.

The Yellow Jackets would pull to within 10 points on a banked three-pointer by Jill Ingram with 15:02 remaining in the game, but never got closer than 10 as the Hokies went on a 16-8 run over the next 7:12 to take control of the game. Virginia Tech’s made just one field goal in the final 3:30 of the game, but the Hokies maintained their lead by converting on 10-of-10 from the free-throw line during that time while shooting 92 percent (23-for-25) from the charity stripe on the evening.

Georgia Tech will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts the Duke Blue Devils at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in a game that will be aired on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network, which includes FSN South, Sunshine and Comcast. The Georgia Tech student station will also broadcast the contest on WREK-FM, 91.1 in Atlanta, and online at www.wrek.org. Livestats for the game will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
