THE FLATS – Inés Noguero finished with a career-high 16 points, connecting on a personal-best four three-pointers as Georgia Tech dropped a tough decision to Florida State on Sunday, 99-58.
Shooting struggles plagued the Yellow Jackets (9-5, 0-3 ACC) in the first half as Florida State (14-2, 3-0 ACC) was able to build a double-digit lead in the opening 10 minutes with Tech shooting just 12.5 percent from the field. Noguero provided a spark off the bench in the second frame, but the Seminoles always had an answer. Tech came out with energy to start the third period, closing the gap to 42-29 of back-to-back buckets from Bianca Jackson, but it would be the closest the Jackets would come the remainder of the game.
Tech finished the game shooting 27.3 percent (21-77) from the field and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the free throw line. Noguero was the only Yellow Jacket to finish in double-figures with 16 points. Kayla Blackshear fell just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds and eight points.
Florida State was paced by Ta’Niya Latson with 32 points, Brianna Turnage (11) and Makayla Timpson (10). The Seminoles won the battle on the glass, 48-41, behind Timpson’s team-high nine rebounds. All 10 Seminoles took the floor and contributed offensively in the win. FSU converted 22-of-25 free throws and finished 13-for-23 from three-point range.
Georgia Tech returns to the road for a pair of ACC contests beginning at Louisville on Thursday, Jan. 5. Tip is slated for 8 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center and will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
Competitive Drive Initiative
In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative met its initial fundraising goal of $2.5 million in less than six weeks and has extended its target to $3.5 million raised by Dec. 31. Any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, meaning that if the $3.5 million fundraising goal is met, the matching gift would result in a $7 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
