THE FLATS –Georgia Tech volleyball (13-17, 8-11 ACC) battled hard but fell to Miami (20-5, 14-5 ACC), 3-2, in the penultimate match of the regular season on Wednesday evening.
Head coach Michelle Collier says:
“I was proud of the fight. Miami has been having a very strong season and we pushed them hard. We’ve got to clean some things up on our side in order to finish a match like this. We will prepare for Florida State and hope to finish our season on a high note.”
How it happened:
Battling it out to start the match, the teams traded points to a score of 7-7 before the Jackets used a 5-0 run to take the lead. Tech extended its lead to five at 12-7, causing Miami to use its first timeout. The Hurricanes were able to get a little going but the Jackets stayed ahead, only allowing Miami to come within three. Tech maintained its lead to close out the set at 25-18 for the 1-0 lead.
The white and gold carried its momentum into the second set, jumping to a 7-3 lead to start the set. Miami found its footing and tied up the set at 10-10. The Hurricanes then used a 7-0 run to overtake the Jackets. Sophomore Kodie Comby ended the run at 17-11 following a timeout but the set was already out of reach. Miami pocketed the second at 25-15 to even the score.
Miami took the early lead in the set but the Jackets battled back, knotting the score at 17-17. Tech used a 5-0 run to take the lead off a kill from senior Gabby Benda. The Jackets held onto it to take the set at 25-21 for the 2-1 lead.
Miami took the lead from the start but the Jackets stayed in it. Using its first timeout at 10-4, Tech tried to gain control of the set. Miami just kept rolling and Tech used its second timeout as the Hurricanes pushed their lead to 16-8. By that point, the set was out of reach and Miami forced a fifth set with a 25-16 win over the fourth.
The Hurricanes once again took the early lead, forcing the Jackets to call timeout trailing 5-2. Tech battled back to come within one at 7-6, inciting Miami to use its first timeout. The Jackets scored the next point off a Miami attack error to tie the set but the Hurricanes took back the lead, this time for good. The Hurricanes sealed the match at 15-8.
