Jackets Drop 70-65 Decision at Wake Forest in Overtime

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Georgia Tech led with 25 seconds left in regulation, but Wake Forest hit a free throw with two seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. Wake Forest outscored Tech 7-2 in the extra period to take the win 70-65 Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened
Georgia Tech led by as many as nine points in the first half, but a 9-0 Wake Forest run midway through the second quarter erased the Jackets’ lead and gave the Demon Deacons a 31-30 lead. Francesca Pan hit a jumper to end the first half as Tech held a narrow 32-31 lead at intermission. Wake Forest held the lead for less than a minute in the first half, but outscored the Jackets 16-10 in the second frame.

The Jackets came out with a four-point lead early in the third quarter, but Wake Forest responded using a 20-8 run over the final six minutes of the frame to gain its largest lead at 55-47 heading into the fourth quarter. The Deacons expanded their lead to eight points, but Chanin Scott ignited the Tech offense as the Jackets worked their way back and regained the lead off a Francesca Pan triple at the 6:07 mark to lead 61-58. Ariel Stephenson sank a triple in response to setup a tied ballgame, 61-61, with 5:40 to play.

O’Neil put the Jackets on top with a jumper at the 2:23 mark, but the Jackets missed a pair of free throws with 2.6 left and the Deacons took a trip to its own charity stripe. WFU hit the back end to tie the game at 63-63 with 2.1 on the clock and Tech couldn’t get a shot off in the final seconds, sending the game to overtime. WFU outscored Tech 7-2 in the overtime period to seal the win.
