ATLANTA – Despite a 47-minute lightning delay, Georgia Tech completed the second day of fall camp this afternoon at Rose Bowl Fields in helmets and shorts. There is a good chance that the Jackets will not play a game in worse conditions than what they endured for the first 15 minutes of practice this afternoon as a torrential rain storm hit just as they took the field.
“It was tough having to wait out the storm and I think we lost some of our sharpness when we came back,” head coach Paul Johnson said. “Still, we were able to get some good things done today and now can turn our attention to practicing tomorrow in shells when we can turn it up a notch.”
Just seconds after the first horn sounded, a torrential downpour fell on the Jackets as they were stretching. They practiced for 15 minutes in the deluge, before heading for cover at 3:16 PM due to lightning.
Just after 4:00 PM, officials gave the all clear and the players raced back out on the fields to resume practice. They still worked through all of their drills and got some good experience running the new offense in wet conditions. The hour-long severe thunderstorm left several inches of standing water in some spots on the field.
“We were a little sluggish after the rain but practiced hard and got a lot of things accomplished today,” sophomore B-back Jonathan Dwyer said. “We are gaining a little more momentum each day and once we get in pads it will be full steam ahead.”
Tech will practice again tomorrow at 3:00 PM at the Rose Bowl Field. All practices are open to the public until further notice.
