Jackets Continue Play in Southern Intercollegiate Championships

Sept. 9, 2006

ATHENS, Ga. – Two Yellow Jacket doubles teams have advanced to the third day of play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, which is being contested in Athens, Ga. at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex Sept. 8-11.

The doubles team of Eric Molnar and David North blanked Vanderbilt’s combination of Ryan Preston and Vijay Paul, 8-0, while Jordan Delass and Luke Rassow-Kantor stopped Chattanooga’s doubles tandem of Mittiga and Axente, 8-2, to both advance to Sunday’s Round of 16 matches at the tournament.

North also advanced to the third day of singles play with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Florida State’s Jonathan Sucupira, who was one of the top-16 seeds in the tournament, in his first match in the consolation bracket.

Elsewhere, Delass posted a stellar 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) victory over the tournament’s sixth-seeded singles player, Vanderbilt’s Preston, but didn’t have enough left to overcome UNC Charlotte’s Roy Sichel, who was also seeded, as Sichel posted a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win in the afternoon round.

Rookie Austin Roebuck also won his second singles match in the main draw, 7-6 (4), 6-4 over Omer Abramovich of the College of Charleston, before falling 8-6, 6-3, 6-3, to East Tennessee State’s Travis Sandlant Saturday afternoon.

The tournament features players from 35 different schools around the southeast and is comprised of three singles and two doubles divisions. Both doubles teams, as well as North, will continue play in the tournament Sunday morning.
