For the fifth time in as many seasons, the Georgia Tech women’s track and field team scored at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Yellow Jackets finished in a tie for 47th place at the 2006 NCAA meet, scoring four points.
“We had a lot of great races at this year’s meet,” said Tech women’s coach Alan Drosky. “We might not have finished as high as we would have liked, but we competed and that’s all you can ask.”
Competing for the women at the national outdoor championships were Brandy Depland, Fatmata Fofanah, Ashlee Kidd, Andriane Lapsley, Shantia Moss and Jacqua Williams.
Depland earned All-America honors for the second straight outdoor season. The senior from Katy, Texas, finished runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the triple jump and tallied a 10th-place finish at the outdoor NCAA meet with a mark of 41 feet, 11 ½ inches.
Fofanah, a junior from Bronx, N.Y., tallied a 14th-place finish in the women’s 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 13.53. She garnered All-ACC honors for the second straight season in the sprint hurdles at the outdoor ACC meet.
Kidd, a junior from St. Petersburg, Fla., tallied a fifth-place finish in the women’s 400-meter dash with a personal-record time of 51.57. She earns All-America honors for the second consecutive outdoor season in the 400.
Lapsley posted a 25th-place finish in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 23.93. A senior from San Antonio, Texas, won the 100m dash at the ACC Outdoor Championships and ended her career as a six-time ACC champion for the Yellow Jackets.
Moss, a sophomore from Tamarac, Fla., won her first ACC title in the 100m hurdles for Tech with a time of 13.18 at the outdoor conference championships. She garnered All-America honors at the outdoor NCAA meet in the sprint hurdles with a 10th-place finish, posting a time of 13.18.
Williams, a freshman from Seattle, Wash., joined the track team after the women’s basketball season and qualified for the outdoor national championships as the anchor for the Tech 4x100m relay team. The relay team of Moss, Kidd, Lapsley and Williams finished ninth with a time of 44.16, after winning the ACC title for the second time in as many seasons.
On the men’s side, sophomore Jerome Miller earned All-America honors in the high jump with a mark of 7 feet, ¼ inch, in the finals, finishing in 10th place. During the prelims, Miller posted a Tech record tying personal-best mark of 7 feet, 1 ½ inches, to become the first male Tech athlete to earn All-America honors in the high jump.
“With such a young team I did not know what to expect,” said Tech men’s coach Grover Hinsdale. “We had some good competitions during the season and look to improve on our performances next season.”
Florida State captured the men’s national outdoor championship this season, the first ever in school history, and the Yellow Jackets finished in eighth place at the ACC Outdoor Championships, the first time Tech was outside of the top five in five seasons.
“With the team we having coming back, I expect us to get back to where we belong, both in conference and nationally,” said Hinsdale.
