Jackets' Brewer Sets Hammer Throw School Record at Penn Relays

April 26, 2003

PHILADELPHIA – Atlantic Coast Conference champion Ian Brewer broke his own school record in the hammer throw Saturday to lead the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams on the final day of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

A sophomore, Brewer placed third in the championship section of the event with a toss of 204’8.00″, a performance that topped his previous best of 203’2.00″ set at the Sea Ray Relays. He owns the top mark in the ACC this season and is qualified for the NCAA East Region Championships.

In the relay portion of the meet, the men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Brian Ford, Sharif Azim, Matt Trester and Bryan Swarn ran a season-best 3:09.18 to finish fourth in the college final. Additionally, the men’s 4×800-meter relay team of Brendon Mahoney, Neil McDonagh, David Schmidt and Barton Crist placed fifth with a time of 7:30.78. Fresh off a school record Friday, the women’s 4×200-meter relay clocked a time of 1:36.77 to finish seventh in the Championship of America final. The team consisted of Amandi Rhett, Dana Rogers, Jessica DeFreitas and Shanta Smith.

In other individual action, Rhett was seventh the final of women’s 100-meter dash with a time of 11.53, while senior Brian Fraser leaped 48’0.75″ to place 10th in the men’s triple jump. In late action Friday, Smith placed seventh the championship triple jump with a 41’1.50″ performance.

Next weekend, Tech heads to either Stanford’s Cardinal Qualifier, which runs May 2-3, or the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio, set for May 4.
