ATLANTA – Senior Tara Knudsen went 4-for-7 on the day, with a grand slam and four runs batted in and junior Jessica Sallinger fired a two-hitter in the nightcap to lead No. 21 Georgia Tech past Ohio University, 11-3 (6) and 6-0, this afternoon at Glenn Field. The Yellow Jackets banged out 20 hits and three home runs in the doubleheader. Tech improves to 29-7, while Ohio falls to 5-16.
The Jackets continued to swing hot bats in the opening inning of game one, tallying four runs in the first inning. Senior Soraya Reddick led off with a walk and reached second base on a ground out to the right side. Senior Tara Knudsen then walked and Reddick and Knudsen stole third and second base. Junior Katie Donovan then drove in the first run of the inning with a ground ball that Ohio’s shortstop threw away at first base to score Knudsen as well. Junior Liz Bartle then stung a ball over the right field fence for a two-run home run as Tech led 4-0 after one inning of play.
Tech tallied two more runs in the bottom of the second inning as senior Sara Wissmann connected on her second home run of the season to push the lead to five. Reddick then slammed a base hit to right field in which the right fielder misplayed and Reddick came all the way around the bases to score as the Yellow Jackets led 6-0.
Ohio loaded the bases in the third inning and cut into Tech’s lead as Erin Chapman doubled to right center field with two outs to plate two Bobcats as the lead moved to four, 6-2. Ohio’s Natalie Armstrong entered the circle for the Bobcats in the bottom half of the third.
Tech responded in the bottom half of the third inning as Donovan walked, senior Tasha Waugh reached on an error and sophomore Lauren Schlechte had a bunt single. Ohio made a defensive play as the shortstop threw out Donovan at the plate on a force out as Tech had the bases loaded with two outs. Kumar drew a walk to force in a run for the Jackets and Reddick then grounded out to third base as the lead advanced up one, 7-2.
Bartle drove in her third run of the game with a double to right field to plate Knudsen who singled up the middle as Tech’s lead jumped out to six, 8-2.
Freshman Sarah Wood entered the game for the Yellow Jackets on the mound in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Erin Voeltz (11-3) pitched four innings, giving up seven hits, two earned runs and struck out five Bobcat hitters.
The Bobcats put runners on second and third with one out thanks to an error, base hit and a passed ball to move the runners up a base. Robin Miller plated a run for Ohio as she hit a ground ball to second base for the second out of the inning. Wood registered the final out of the fifth inning via the strikeout as the game headed to the bottom of the inning with Tech on top, 8-3.
The Yellow Jackets put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning as Tech scored three unearned runs to implement the eight-run rule after six innings. Wissman drove in the final run of the inning with a base hit up the middle.
Wood tallied her second save of the season, throwing the final three innings, allowing two hits, one run, no earned runs and struck out two. Bartle led the Rambling Wreck offensively in game one, going 2-for-4, with a home run and three runs batted in. Wissman went 3-for-4, with a home run and two RBIs.
Tech broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning of game two as Reddick single up the middle and sophomore Amy Hosier drove her in with a base hit through the right side as the Jackets led 1-0 after three innings of play.
The Jackets were in business again in the fourth inning as Knudsen led off with a double to center field. After a fly out, Bartle singled up the middle and then stole second base to put runners at second and third with one out. Ohio kept Tech off the scoreboard with a ground out to the pitcher and a fly out to right field as the game moved to the fifth inning with Georgia Tech leading 1-0.
The Rambling Wreck loaded the bases in the fifth inning on three base hits by Wissmann, Kumar and Reddick. Hosier drove in the first run of the inning and Knudsen hit her first grand slam of the season with a blast to center field to break the game open, 6-0. Ohio’s Kerri Harley entered the circle for the Bobcats and retired the side.
Wood came into the game for the Jackets in the circle in the top of the sixth inning. Wood allowed one hit in two innings of work, while striking out one. Sallinger (18-4) threw five innings, allowing just two hits, while fanning 10.
Tech will travel to Troy State on March 29 for a non-conference doubleheader with the Trojans, starting at 4 p.m.
