THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s men’s tennis team was unable to score a point Saturday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis match to fourth-ranked Virginia at the Ken Byers Tennis Center.
Tech fell to 7-11 overall, 1-7 in conference play, while the Cavaliers improved to 17-2 overall and remained unbeaten in ACC matches at 8-0.
The Yellow Jackets were swept in doubles for the second straight match, with Virginia’s Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Jordan Daigle overpowering Will Showers and Colin Edwards, 8-2, at No. 3, while Justin Shane and Mitchell Frank toppled Tech’s No. 1 team of Eduardo Segura and Carlos Benito, 8-4.
Shane beat Showers, 6-1, 6-1, on court 5, while Daigle, ranked 76th, took out Edwards, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6, to open singles play and give the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead. Virginia clinched the match on court 3 with 40th-ranked Ryan Shane’s 6-1, 6-2 win over Cole Fiegel.
The two closest matches of the day took place on the top two courts. Despite going blow for blow in the first set, Rakitt couldn’t overcome the 24th-ranked Alex Domijan on No. 1, falling 7-5, 6-1. Segura finished his match last, being unable to force a tiebreak set against 4th-ranked Frank and losing 6-2, 7-5.
