Jackets Begin Track & Field Season

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech track & field starts its indoor season on Friday with the Clemson Opener. Tech continues its opening weekend of the indoor season at the Boston University Indoor Opener on Saturday.

The Clemson Opener features 16 teams. Field events start at 10 a.m. and will conclude with women’s shot put which is slated to start in the four o’clock hour. Track events start at 11:40 a.m. and conclude with the 4×400 relay at 5:20 p.m.

The Boston University Indoor Opener starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday. All events start with women’s competition followed by men’s competition. Field events start at 11 a.m. with the high jump, shot put, pole vault and long jump. Weight throw and triple jump will start at the end of men’s shot put and long jump, respectively. Field events begin at 11 a.m. as well. Events will run until 6 p.m. culminating with the men’s 5000m.

Georgia Tech comes off the 2021 track and field season where the women ranked No. 33 in the nation during the outdoor track and field season. The outdoor season was highlighted by Nicole Fegans winning the ACC Championship in the 10000m.

Tech will look to replace the production from Bria Matthews who graduated in the spring. Matthews is the all-time Georgia Tech record holder in the indoor long jump (21-0.00), outdoor long jump (21-7.25) and outdoor triple jump (45-7.25).

The women’s team had five NCAA All-American honors during the 2021. Fegans was an All-American in the 5000m in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Matthews earned All-American status in the triple jump and long jump during the outdoor season. The final honor belongs to Olivia Moore who was an All-American in the pole vault during the indoor season. Moore also holds the Tech record in the event (14-2.00).

The men’s team is highlighted by Cole Miller who holds the all-time Georgia Tech record in the 2000 meter steeplechase.

After this weekend, the Jackets compete again on Jan. 8 when they return to Clemson for the Clemson Orange & Purple Classic.
