ATLANTA – The 2006 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team, ranked sixth in the nation at the end of last season after a year in which it won the 2005 ACC Championship and advanced to the Sweet-16 for the first time in history, begins its 2006 campaign as the nation’s fourth-ranked team behind 2005 National Champion Stanford, Florida and national runner-up Texas.
Stanford received all 31 of the first-place voted in the first Fila Collegiate Tennis Ranking of the season and has 1575 votes overall. Florida stands second with 1534 votes, while Texas and Georgia Tech have 1533 and 1532 points, respectively. Southern California rounds out the top-five with 1530 votes.
Four Yellow Jackets are currently ranked in the top-75 in the nation in singles play, including two in the top-25. All-American sophomore Kristi Miller is the highest-ranked Yellow Jacket, standing at No. 7 in the singles rankings, while Tarryn Rudman is next at No. 25 in the standings. Senior Kelly Anderson begins the season with a No. 35 national ranking, while senior Lyndsay Shosho stands at No. 71.
A pair of doubles teams from Georgia Tech are ranked in the top-50, including the duo of Miller and Shosho at No. 26, while Anderson and sophomore Whitney McCray stand at No. 42 after recording a 7-1 record in the fall.
The Atlantic Coast Conference had 10 of 12 women’s tennis teams ranked in the top-75, 16 ranked singles players and nine doubles teams ranked in the top-50.
