ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams both rank in the Top 20 of the Power Rankings this week. The women’s track team remains in the Top 10 at No. 6, while the men currently rank No. 15. The women appear in the Trackwire Rankings for the fourth consecutive week, moving up two spots to No. 19. Both the men and women will be in action this weekend at the Tiger Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 14, in the Clemson Indoor Track and Field facility.
“We are very pleased that we have cracked the Top 20 this week,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “Our last two meets have been outstanding which has really helped our ascent to this level. We are only taking those athletes who will benefit from another competition at the facility prior to the ACC Championships on Feb. 20-21. The remainder of the team will stay at home and train through the weekend.”
“We’re taking a small group to Clemson,” said women’s head coach Alan Drosky. “We will continue to prepare for the ACC Championships next weekend, so most of the team will train at home and rest. It’s another chance for our athletes to compete in Clemson’s new indoor facility this weekend.”
The Team Power Ranking is a unique system of ranking teams on the basis of quality of athletic performance, team depth, and dual meet scoring potential. The system rates teams in the same fashion as decathlete or hepthatlete. Points are assigned for two athletes in each event contested in a dual meet and points assigned on the basis of quality of performance. The top person in each event has his/her points doubled to adjust for the value of the number one performer on each team in a dual meet. The points for all events are then totaled for the ranking score.
Tech will compete in the 2004 Indoor ACC Championships on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21, in Clemson, S.C. The championship meet is scheduled to run all day.
