KNOXVILLE, TN (Oct. 15) – Georgia Tech sophomore Mason Miller won her opening round singles match and teamed with senior Sabrina Pardo to win in doubles Friday as the Yellow Jackets’ women’s tennis team opened play at the Tennessee/St. Mary’s Health System Classic at the UT Tennis Center in Knoxville.
Miller defeated NC State’s Loni Worsley, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, in the No. 3 singles flight and, along with Pardo, topped Gene Holman and Natali The of Furman, 8-5, in the No. 1 doubles flight.
Freshman Charlotte Pernet and junior Bobbi Guthrie both posted straight-set singles wins for the Jackets. Pernet defeated Eimear Sloan of Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 4 singles flight, and Guthrie downed Lynsey Fick of Purdue, 6-3, 6-1.
Pernet also teamed with fellow freshman Jaime Wong to defeat Megan Dunigan and Jarrell Starnes of Furman, 9-8, in the No. 2 doubles flight.
Tech’s winners all advanced to the semifinals in their respective flights which will be contested Saturday.
