Jacket Netters Fall to William & Mary

ATLANTA (Jan. 29) — William & Mary’s Tim Csontos defeated Georgia Tech’s Sergio Aguirre at No. 6 singles to clinch the Tribe’s 4-3 victory over the Yellow Jackets in men’s collegiate tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Csontos downed Aguirre, 6-3, 6-2, as William & Mary (3-1) won four of the six singles matches on the day after Tech (1-1) won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point.

“I was pleased with the way we came out,” said Georgia Tech head coach Kenny Thorne. “We came out and played some of the best doubles we’ve played this year. William & Mary played well after the doubles and jumped on us pretty quick in singles. They took it to us in singles and changed the momentum of the match.”

Tech’s three wins in doubles was highlighted by Roger Anderson and Tim Bibby’s win against Brian Lubin and Jody Strick, who are ranked 30th nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Anderson and Bibby won 8-6 at the No. 1 doubles slot.

After winning the three doubles matches to go up 1-0 in the team score, the Jackets fell dropped first sets in two of the first three singles matches as the Tribe posted victories at the No. 1 and 3 postitions to go up 2-1 in the match. Tech evened the match score at 2-2 when Robert Wright defeated Alexander Soeters, 7-6 (1), 6-4, at No. 2.

William & Mary retook the lead by winning at No. 4 when Mehdy Karbid topped David Wright, 7-6 (6), 6-4, before Anderson pulled the Jackets to 3-3 in the match by defeating Lubin, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 position.
