Howard, Muguruza and Sion Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

ATLANTA – Track stars Chaunte Howard and Zeb Sion along with men’s tennis standout Jose Luis Muguruza were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, January 17, 2005.

Howard, a junior from Riverside, Calif., won the women’s high jump at the Kentucky Invitational with a NCAA Automatic qualifying mark of 6’1.50″ to lead the Yellow Jackets at the indoor track meet. The NCAA high jump national champion and 2004 Olympian also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.88 and finished the 200-meter race with a time of 24.92.

Muguruza, a sophomore from Wesley Chapel, Fla., won three singles matches at the Puerto Rico Invitational, including wins over No. 2 Ryler DeHeart of Illinois, No. 21 Conor Niland of California and No. 23 Fabrizio Sestini of Texas Christian. In the tournament, Muguruza finished with a 3-0 record in singles and a 1-2 record in doubles.

Sion, a senior from Pocatello, Idaho, broke the Georgia Tech school record in the shot put with a NCAA Provisional mark of 58’7.50″ at the Kentucky Invitational, recording the top collegian mark to lead the Yellow Jackets.
