ATLANTA–Chaunte Howard and Jerome Miller earned all-Atlantic Coast Conference honors to lead the Georgia Tech track teams on the second day of competition at the ACC Championships. The Tech men stand fourth with 31 points, while the Tech women are eighth (14 points) but stand poised for a strong showing after advancing 12 runners to Saturday’s finals.
Howard, the three-time defending NCAA champion in the high jump, placed second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet-3.50 inches, an NCAA regional qualifying mark. She will compete in the high jump, in which she has won five straight ACC titles, Saturday, and she also qualified for the finals of the 100-meter dash. Brandy Depland also scored for the Jackets in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet-6.25 inches, good for sixth place.
Miller, a freshman, placed third in the men’s high jump with a leap of 6 feet-10.75 inches, equaling his personal best and achieving the NCAA regional qualifying standard.
Cristan Duvall placed sixth in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 9:04.69, a personal best and NCAA regional qualifying time.
The Tech women’s sprinters ran very well in Friday’s preliminaries as Yellow Jackets claimed four of the top six qualifying times in the 100-meter hurdles and four of the top seven marks in the 100-meter dash.
In the hurdles, Fatmata Fofanah had the best qualifying mark of the day at 13.32, a personal best and NCAA regional qualifying mark, followed by Dana Rogers, who qualified third at 13.55, Andriane Lapsley, fourth at 13.53, and Shantia Moss, sixth at 13.60.
Lapsley, the ACC indoor champion in the 60 meters, posted the top mark in the 100 meters at 11.36, a personal best and an NCAA region qualifying time. Rogers was fifth at 11.80, Shantrell Moss was sixth at 11.82 and Chaunte Howard’s time was seventh-best at 11.83.
The Tech women advanced three runners in the 200 meters in Lapsley (2nd, 23.65), Ashlee Kidd (3rd, 23.82) and Shantrell Moss (6th, 24.32).
Kidd ran the second-fastest qualifying mark in the 400 meters at 53.08, while in the men’s 400, Brian Ford qualified third at 47.21. Donald Beamer advanced in the men’s 200 with a time of 21.72.
Montrell Person took a step toward defending his title in the 110-meter high hurdles by posting the fastest qualifying time at 13.80. Person also qualified sixth in the 100 meters with a 10.64 clocking.
Neil McDonagh advanced to the 1500 meters final with a time of 3:54.76.
The ACC Championships, held at Florida State, conclude Saturday.
