THE FLATS – Georgia Tech diving competed on the second day of the Zone ‘B’ Diving Championships, hosted at McAuley Aquatic Center. Camryn Hidalgo qualified for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, also hosted at McAuley Aquatic Center.
Hidalgo qualified on the 3-meter board on Monday. She placed fifth going into finals, 54.05 points ahead of 10th place and qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
During finals, Hidalgo extended her margin over 10th place to 102.70 points before her final dive, nearly assuring qualification in the event. Her best dive of finals came on her fourth dive, a back 2 ½ somersault pike (205B). The dive has a degree of difficult of 3.0 and Hidalgo secured two 7.5s and one seven to total 66.00 for the dive.
Men’s competition started on Monday as the men took to the 1-meter board. Ruben Lechuga and Allen Mann were competing in the event. Lechuga qualified for finals while Mann missed qualification by two spots, placing 20th in prelims.
Lechuga was in eighth place going into finals, the cutoff for qualification on the men’s 1-meter board. He climbed up to sixth place going into the final dive, buoyed by a strong third dive. Lechuga performed a forward 2 ½ somersault 1 twist pike (5152B) scoring a 59.20, the second-best dive in the round.
Up 5.90 points on ninth, Lechuga needed to execute his final dive in order to secure qualification on the 1-meter board. He sat in seventh with two divers to go. Both scored enough to dump Lechuga to ninth place and out of qualification.
The White and Gold will continue competition at the Zone ‘B’ Diving Championships on Tuesday when all six qualified Tech divers will compete. Lechuga and Mann will compete on the 3-meter board while Hidalgo, Carmen Woodruff, Anna Bradescu and Kelsey Dekshenieks will compete on platform.
Competition starts at 11 a.m. on the 1-meter board.
