Herndon Breaks 17-Year-Old School Record

Final Results

PHILADELPHIA, PA. — On day one of the Penn Relays Hana Herndon led the way for the Georgia Tech track and field team as she picked up a school record at Franklin Field on Thursday night.

“It was a great night for the women and the men.  This is the time of the year when you want to be running your best, and on that account, tonight was about as good as it can get it,” noted women’s track and field head coach Alan Drosky.

Herndon would finish in 4th in the women’s 5k breaking a 17-year-old school record originally set by Renee Metivier, with a time of 16:12.03. Nicole Fegans also performed well in the women’s 5k, finishing in 7th with a time of 16:32.63.

“Almost everyone who lined up ran their best time ever, but the headline has to be Hana’s magnificent effort to break a school record set in 2002.  Her time should certainly make it to the NCAA East Preliminary where she will join Nicole, who ran a qualifying earlier in the season, and Liz got under the ACC qualifying mark.

On the men’s side, Andrew Kent earned a PR with a time of 14:06.63 and a top three finish, and Christian Bowles finished in 8th with a PR of 14:10.55.

“Andrew and Christian both ran times that should advance to the NCAA East Preliminary and both surpassed the ACC qualifying time.  It’s just great to see everyone raising the bar together.”

The Jackets will partake in day three of the Penn Relays on Saturday while select Georgia Tech student-athletes will begin day one of the Torrin Lawrence on Friday in Athens.
