Helluva Week at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, LONDON, UK–Former Georgia Tech men’s tennis standout, Christopher Eubanks’ dream run at Wimbledon came-to-a-Close on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Making his main draw debut at Wimbledon, Eubanks was the lone American remaining in the tournament, advancing to his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Eubanks’ extraordinary run ended in a five-set battle to Daniil Medvedev, as the No. 3 seed rallied for a 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 win. To reach the quarterfinals, Eubanks defeated two top-15 seeds and was one set away from his highest ranked win in his career against Medvedev (defeating No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas on July 10 marks his career-high). He also broke a 31-year record (set by Andre Agassi in 1992) for most winners hit during a single year at Wimbledon with 321.

Eubanks became the fifth American – and 14th player overall – in the Open Era (since 1968) to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals in his main draw debut. The former Yellow Jacket joined the likes of Jimmy Connors (1972), John McEnroe (1977), Tim Mayotte (1981) and Paul Annacone (1984) in the elite club of Americans.

The 27-year-old’s run was one for the record books for a multitude of reasons, also including that he was the first Black American man to reach the Wimbledon quarters in 27 years.

Eubanks stepped into the spotlight earlier this year when he reached the quarterfinals at the Miami Open. Just two weeks ago, the Atlanta native won his first career ATP Tour title, capturing the Mallorca Championships.

Eubanks, who had not cracked the Top 100 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings less than four months ago and was ranked No. 77 entering Wimbledon, is expected to jump to a career-high No. 31 in the rankings released on Monday.

Second round def. No. 12 Cameron Norrie (GBR) – 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3)
Third round def. Christopher O’Connell (AUS) – 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2)
