Georgia Tech head volleyball coach Bond Shymansky, who directed his team to an appearance in the Elite Eight of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, has signed a new four-year contract, athletic director Dave Braine announced Wednesday.
The new contract will run through the 2007-08 year.
“I am excited about the opportunity to continue coaching at such a fine school for another four years,” said Shymansky, who owns a 67-10 record in two seasons at Tech, a .870 winning percentage. “I am very thankful to Dave Braine and the administration for their support. I feel very fortunate to be part of a great athletic program that has such a strong commitment to its student athletes.”
Shymansky, 31, led the Jackets to the Atlantic Coast Championship in 2002, his first season as a head coach while guiding the team to a 33-6 record and a No. 17 final national ranking in the USA Today/Coaches Poll. This year, he helped Tech to a 34-4 overall record, including 23 straight wins to open the season, and a final ranking of No. 8 in the poll. In two seasons, he has coached four all-Americans and six all-ACC players, including Kele Eveland, an AVCA first-team all-American and the ACC Player of the Year this year.
“We are very pleased to keep Bond at Georgia Tech for the next four years,” said athletic director Dave Braine. “Over the past two years, our volleyball team has experienced the finest success in the program’s history, and it’s no secret that Bond is a big reason why that has happened. Bond is one of the young up and coming coaches in the country, and we are very fortunate to have him as the head volleyball coach here at Tech.”
Prior to becoming the head coach at Tech, Shymansky spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Jackets, helping them to the 2001 ACC regular season title and two NCAA appearances.
