Former Georgia Tech quarterback Joe Hamilton, now playing for the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League (AFL), has been named the AFL Rookie of the Month for February of the 2004 season.
Hamilton (5-10, 190, Georgia Tech) earned Rookie of the Month honors by leading the Predators (1-2) from the quarterback spot – taking over for current Orlando head coach and AFL Hall of Famer Jay Gruden. Hamilton completed 65-of-102 (63.7%) passes for 753 yards, 15 touchdowns and no interceptions in February. He also rushed five times for 13 yards and two touchdowns. This marks the first time that Hamilton has earned an AFL award.
The Alvin, S.C., native completed his career with the Yellow Jackets in 1999, when he was a consensus first-team all-America and the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. Hamilton is Tech’s career leader in passing yards and total offense.
He spent three seasons (2000-02) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL, earning a Super Bowl ring with the Bucs.
Hamilton and the Orlando Predators visit Atlanta to face the Georgia Force on April 18.
