Guthrie, Jenkin Tandem Advances to Finals of Fall Tourney

ATLANTA (Sept. 24) – Georgia Tech’s doubles tandem of Bobbi Guthrie and Tamarra Jenkin advanced to the flight “A” doubles final, and six Yellow Jacket women”s singles players all won their opening round matches Friday in first day action of the Georgia Tech/Holiday Inn Midtown North Invitational at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Guthrie and Jenkin, Atlantic Coast Conference champions at No. 2 doubles last season, advanced to Sunday’s final by defeating K.B. Mogonediwa and Anke Reints of Alabama Birmingham, 8-3, and Taryn Lynn and Lindsey Wyth of Stetson, 8-4.

Tech’s tandem of Mason Miller and Sabrina Pardo, ranked 19th nationally, advanced to the flight “A” doubles semifinals with an 8-1 win against Laren Goldsmith and Meeta Koregaonkar of Jacksonville.

“I had fun watching the girls compete for the first time today,” said first year Tech coach Bryan Shelton. “I was pleased with the effort from the beginning of the day to the end. We made improvements on the things we have been working on in practice, and it was nice to see all those things come out in the matches.”

Guthrie also won her first round match in the flight “A” singles draw, downing Tiffany Pinciotti of Jacksonville in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Tech freshmen Mysti Morris and Jaime Wong were victorious in their collegiate debuts in the “A” flight. Morris defeated Anke Reints of Alabama Birmingham, 6-0, 6-2, and Wong topped Jenny Gonzalez of UNC Greensboro, 6-3, 6-2.

In the singles “B” flight, Tech sophomore Laura Ozolins advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win over UNCG’s Audrey LeGay, and freshman Charlotte Pernet advanced with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Ashley Rimel, also of UNCG. Jenkin won her singles match in the “C” flight, topping Laren Goldsmith of Jacksonville, 6-0, 6-0.

Ozolins and Pernet, and Morris and Wong also teamed to advance to the semifinals of the flight “B” doubles draw. Ozolins and Pernet downed UNCG’s Caroline Covington and Kelly Edwards, 8-1, in their first round match and Greta Perovic and Sharon Schmeiser of Jacksonville, 8-2, in the second round. Morris and Wong defeated Sjouke Liem and Michelle North of Alabama Birmingham, 8-1, in round one and Jennifer Parsons and Amanda Smeak of Stetson, 8-0.

The Georgia Tech/Holiday Inn Midtown North Holiday Invitational continues Saturday with matches beginning at 9 a.m. Finals in all flights in singles and doubles will be contested Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
