July 6, 2015
THE FLATS – Following up a successful NBA Development League season 2014-15, former Georgia Tech basketball standout Kammeon Holsey made a strong debut for the Detroit Pistons team in the NBA’s Orlando Summer League.
The 6-8 forward from Sparta, Ga., scored 16 points, hitting 7-of-9 shots from the floor, to lead the Pistons’ entry to a 77-69 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. He also added three rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Holsey played last season for the Piston’s D-League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive, averaging 16.2 minutes, 5.4 points and 3.7 rebounds while hitting 49.3 percent of his field goal tries. In four seasons at Georgia Tech, Holsey averaged 7.3 points and 4.3 rebounds while hitting 55 percent of his shots from the floor.
Glen Rice, Jr., who was on the Washington Wizards roster early last season but played most of the year in the D-League for Rio Grande Valley, scored six points on 2-of-6 shooting in his first game with the Orlando Magic’s white team (the Magic has two teams in the summer league).
SHUMPERT, YOUNG EARN LUCRATIVE CONTRACTS
Former point guard Iman Shumpert, who helped carry the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA finals in 2015, didn’t remain a free agent long, coming to terms on a four-year, $40-million contract with the Cavaliers on the first day of the free agent signing period. The 6-5 Shumpert started 16 of the 20 Cavaliers’ playoff games, averaging 9.1 points and 4.9 rebounds. In 24 regular-season games with Cleveland after his trade from New York, he averaged 9.3 points and 3.4 rebounds.
Thaddeus Young opted out of his contract with the New Jersey Nets, but agreed to re-sign with the organization at $50 million over four years. The 6-8 forward, who led Tech to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, averaged 13.8 points and 5.9 rebounds in 28 games for the Nets after being traded from Minnesota. He helped the Nets reach the 2015 playoffs, where they lost to Atlanta in the first round.
Free agents cannot sign their contracts until July 9.
