AUBURN, Ala. — The Georgia Tech track & field squad opened competition at the Tiger Track Classic on Friday, and the Jackets were able to claim a victory in the 5000m.
Melissa Fairey, a junior from Mount Pleasant, S.C., finished with a time of 17:07.95 to claim the top spot in the women’s 5000m. Mary Prouty and Hailey Gollnick also finished fifth and sixth in the race, respectively.
“We got a good start to the weekend with a nice win in the 5000m from Melissa Fairey,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “She led from the start, got passed with a lap to go, then came back with a good kick. Mary and Hailey also had nice finishes. In the javelin, Ashleigh (Uhl) and Julia (Frederick) had some decent throws, they just need more opportunities as it’s still early in the outdoor season. Bria (Matthews) jumped well, but just couldn’t find the board with the swirling winds and ended without a mark.”
On the men’s side, Nahom Solomon finished third in the 5000m with a time of 14:30.51, while Matt Munns finished fourth with a time of14:40.93. In the men’s triple jump, William Solomon and Ryan Thomas finished tied for 12th with a leap of 14.31m (46-11.50).
The Jackets will begin competition on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with the women’s 4×100. Live results can be followed at http://results.deltatiming.com/tf/2016-tiger-track-classic.
