Gromley Receives Wildcard Bid to BB&T Atlanta Open

THE FLATS — Rising sophomore Cole Gromley has been awarded a wildcard singles bid to the 2019 BB&T Atlanta Open, it was announced, on Tuesday afternoon.

Gromley, a Norcross native and Johns Creek graduate just completed his freshmen season with the Jackets, earning the third-most singles victories on the team with 12. He finished the season with an overall 12-9 singles record, including a 2-0 mark on court one.

“Eddie [Gonzalez] has been very passionate about giving our best local players a shot against the best players in the world on a big stage. This year Cole [Gromley] will get what Eddie calls the Rocky Balboa opportunity,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “It is an absolute honor to have a Georgia Tech current player in the draw. It should be a fun night and I look forward to being there.”

He will participate in the annual College Night event on Tuesday, July 23 at 7 p.m. in Atlantic Station as the first match of the Tuesday evening session.

Directly, following Gromley’s match, there will be a Waffle House “Waffle Eating Contest” featuring local college students including Georgia Tech students.

The BB&T Atlanta Open is held each year in July in Atlantic Station and is one of the summer tournaments in the US Open Series. The tournament features men’s top world tennis players in singles and doubles competition, features approximately 40,000 fans in attendance annually.
