THE FLATS – Georgia Tech cross country’s Katie Townsend was named the ACC Female Cross Country Performer of the Week, and Jeremy Greenwald was named the ACC Male Co-Performer of the Week along with Pittsburgh’s Cullen Davis, the league announced Tuesday.
In the team’s season-opening race at the UGA Invite, Townsend picked up where she left off last season and finished first for the Tech women with a 5K time of 18:19. Townsend was less than five seconds off the leader and crossed the line more than 12 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
Greenwald pulled away from the pack over the last mile and finished first overall in the men’s 8K with a time of 25:53. He crossed the finish line 14 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher Steven Spevacek (26:07) of Georgia and propelled Georgia Tech to the team title over Georgia and Mercer.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Sept. 20 at the Florida Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The competition kicks off at 7:55 a.m.
