Grant and Shosho Lead Tech Women's Tennis Past MTSU, 5-2

MURFREESBORO, TENN. – Led by a pair of singles wins by Sekita Grant and Lydsay Shosho, along with a doubles victory by the duo, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team earned a split on its trip to Tennessee with a 5-2 win over Middle Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon at the Racquet Club in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

The Yellow Jackets (4-2) took an early lead on the Blue Raiders (2-7) by winning the doubles point for the fifth time this season. Tech got wins at both Nos. 2 and 3 to claim the first point in the match. The Jackets’ team of Maria Nieto and Catherine Gunn defeated MTSU’s tandem of Jennifer Klaschka and Emily Vest by an 8-3 count at No.2, while Shosho and Grant downed Laura McNamara and Carien Venter by an 8-2 score at No. 3.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets continued their solid play behind Shosho and Grant. Shosho picked up her second win of the weekend with a straight-set victory over Venter at No. 3. Shosho won the first set by a 6-2 score before claiming the second set by a 6-4 count. Grant clinched the match for Tech with her win at No. 6 over Vest. She won the first set in a tiebreaker by a 7-4 score, before winning the second set by a 6-4 margin.

Tech’s other two singles wins of the day came at No. 2 and No. 5, as both Kelly Anderson and Maria Nieto were victorious. Anderson picked up the win at No. 2, as she needed three sets to defeat Klaschka after dropping the first set by a 7-6 score. The rookie then rallied to win the next two sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Nieto was the winner at No. 5 singles, claiming the fist set by a 6-4 score before dropping the second set 6-1. Nieto then won the match by winning a tiebreaker for the third set by a 10-6 score.

Georgia Tech will be back in action on Feb. 22, when it travels to Athens to face Georgia in a match that will get under way at noon.
