April 12, 2017

RICHMOND, Va. – Georgia Tech track and field members Alex Grady and Bria Matthews were honored as semifinalists for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar of the Year on Tuesday at the Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Awards Luncheon.

Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education and excellence on the tennis court, the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism as well as athletic ability. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or more, be at least a sophomore academically and be active on their campuses or in their communities.

A senior on the men’s track and field team, Alex Grady was honored as a semifinalist for the male sports scholar of the year. Grady received the Peach of an Athlete award in March of 2017. The Covington, Ga., native amassed more than 210 hours of community service during his time at Tech as well as being named to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Cross Country team. Grady was named to the Arthur Ashe Jr. men’s track and field first team.

Bria Matthews is a sophomore jumper on the women’s track and field team. As a freshman she set the Georgia Tech records in the indoor long jump and the outdoor long jump and triple jump. The Morrow, Ga., native was named 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year for indoor track and a 2016 indoor track All-American first-team selection. She competed at the U.S. Olympic trials for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero. Matthews was named to the Arthur Ashe Jr. women’s track and field first team.

The Yellow Jackets are back on The Flats April 21-22 for the Georgia Tech Invitational at the George C. Griffin Track.
